Sushi + a Birthday Party

Last night we celebrated a friend's 30th birthday!  But, first...dinner: group of us went to Yama before the party.  For the New Yorkers reading, Yama is really good sushi - it's not Sushi of Gari or Sushi Seki, but it's good.  Trust me on this one.

We started with these:

The ordering method at Yama always seems to encourage over ordering, though because the diners fill out a small card noting how many of each piece everyone wants.

We were four people (including 3 grown men with big sushi appetites) and wound up with this:

Plus this small plate because the boat wasn't enough couldn't fit everything:

In total, we ordered:

6 salmon sashimi + 4 salmon sushi
1 king crab sashimi + 1 king crab sushi
3 chopped toro sushi + 1 chopped toro sashimi
1 salmon roe sushi
5 tuna sushi
4 yellowtail sushi
2 sweet shrimp sushi
1 octopus sushi
1 eel sushi
5 mackerel sushi
1 yellowtail scallion roll
1 eel avocado roll
1 spicy king crab roll
1 asparagus tempura roll
1 tuna, avocado and shrimp roll

Everything was so good, but my favorites were the salmon and king crab sashimi, plus the tuna avocado and shrimp roll.

Then to the party!  Our friend's husband ordered his wife this sweet chocolate birthday cake.  Lots of frosting diamonds and jewelry...a girl after my own heart!

Boo and I shared a tasty slice:

Hope you had a great Saturday night, too...

What's your go to sushi roll? What's your favorite flavor of cake?

Life in the Suburbs

I think of myself as a city girl, but I really love the time we spend with my soon-to-be-in-laws in the suburbs of Washington DC.

Today we did suburban things including but not limited to -

Sitting by the fire:

...and looking at baby pictures (name that Boo!):

Shopping for butcher blocks:

...and backsplash tile (project to hopefully come soon!)

And talking about our wedding a little lot.

After our requisite trip to Costco (sorry - no pictures to document that portion of the trip, it was too crowded and we had big screen TVs to look at)...we headed to dinner.  Amongst my favorite things about Boo is that he loves to share agrees to share his meals with me.  Doesn't food always taste better when you share it with someone?  Here's what we had:

Seaweed salad over a bed of cucumber noodles:

Spicy tuna cubes (or in laymen's terms, XL-sized tuna tartar):

And our crowning achievement: a massive sushi plate for splitsies (say that 5 times fast) featuring ikura (salmon roe), crab, octopus, eel, saba (mackerel), tuna sushi, salmon sushi for Boo and salmon sashimi for me -

Have you ever seen salmon sashimi -  or any other fish for that matter - formed into roses?  Me either. But they were tasty.  Extra ginger, of course.

After a little more wedding talk, we were craving something sweet, and took a trip to 16 HANDLES.

You might be thinking.  Is 16 HANDLES on her wedding diet?  Come on...everyone needs to live a little.  Here's what we had:

More fun to be had tomorrow...

Do you live in the city or the suburbs?  What's your favorite suburban activity?

Dinner with Friends

Last night Boo and I went for sushi with a few friends who live in Astoria, Queens.  Even if you've never been to Astoria, you may know that it's home to a lot of amazing Greek restaurants.  But, it also has a really vibrant restaurant scene.  Even though we were in Greek food heaven, we opted for sushi.  I really love going out to dinner on Sunday nights of long weekends...random, I know.

I started with a seaweed salad:

Then had 4 pieces salmon sashimi , 1 piece of king crab sushi, 1 piece of fluke sushi plus a yellowtail scallion roll.

I like to eat sushi with a lot of pickled ginger.  I know this is a sushi faux pas, but it's how I like it, so it's how I eat it...

What's your favorite sushi roll?
